Story Boarding







Here are our storyboards of our ideas for filming, this is not an exact order but we have chosen to use ones which are the clearest to see what our ideas/intentions are prior to filming.
Note: This is only 7 of 20 pages worth of storyboarding!!!!

Inspiration



between 1.46 - 2.05 are the shots/techniques that we too would like to use in our music video, our location is in Cambridge and we would like to use a similar overall technique to our own video, but film it as it starts to get dark so we have the lighting effects of the world going by her ay night, while for her everything is standing still.
Its an effective yet simple way of showing how time passes and when used appropriately, really reflects the mood of the character.

Narrative Codes - Music Video



SYMOBLIC:
(defining the oposing forces, e.g. good vs. evil)
Eminem is good, Stan is bad, they look similar on the outside but Eminem is a victim of obsession/stalking without even knowing it.
SEMIC:
(objects cannoting a genre or a potential narritve)
pathetic fallacy is used to cannote angry emotions, there is lightening, its dark, there is a pretty lady etc which portrays all the hero/thriller conventions.
ACTION:
(things happen in a seies of logical consequences, audience understands where narritive is going which motivates viewer to keep watching)
cliche of someone driving in the rain - often leads to death. The audience keep waiting and watching because they want to see the outcome.
CULTURAL
(audience brings own references to the code)
athe audience needs to understand who Eminem is and what he is like, in order to understand the transformation that Stan makes due to his obsession. They then too need to understand how a pregnant woman should be treated aposed to how Stan is treating her.
A reference has been made to 'The Shining" when Jack goes insane, similar behaviour as Stan when he too goes mad.
ENIGMA:
(a puzzle in the narritive which is solved after a suspended amount of time)
Enigma here is not for the audience but for the character in the video, in this case Eminem. He is puzzled as to why he heard on the news that someone drove their pregnant girlfriend off a bridge who was carrying a child. He then clicks that it is in fact Stan. Puzzle solved.

Narrative Codes

As part of our research throughout the project, we were asked to study  the 5 narrative codes, research their meaning and find a music video of our own which represents each of these and then present it to the class explianing each of the codes and where in the chosen video they are.
The codes are;
Symbolic
Semic
Action
Cultural
Enigma

We had to work in our groups, or in my case pair, so me and Maddy did some research and found the video which fit all the codes most appropriately.
We chose to use the video 'Stan' - Eminem ft. Dido as it has a good clear storyline and fits all of the narrtative codes appropriately.

Update Before Filming

we are later this week going to go into town after school and gather the last bit of costumes and make up for filming, we are not sure as of yet how much it is going to cost but to create the the look we are hoping to achieve we are wiling to pay the prices.
As we feel it is going to take a fair bit of time to get the make up and costumes correct and effective enough, we are going to use an hour of one of our lessons preparing our actor in all her make up and costume and then use after school to film on hopefully the HD camera and use the studio to start to create sections of the film that are going to play key roles in our production.
We have different characters so the makeup and costumes will be very time consuming as we want to create the most realistic and effective look as we have around 5 different female characters/roles throughout the music video, each of which we wish to make as effective and realistic as possible, reflecting their character appropriately.

Research and Planning Video Summary

today we were set a task by our tutors to film an assessed piece discussing our research and planning so far into our project, our reasons behind our ideas and why we have chosen the things that we have.
we had to use the guidelines given in our brief and plan notes on how we were going to present our research, plans and ideas and we then had to film ourselves talking about it, showing examples of our research and the work we had done so far.
We were given 20 minutes to complete the piece and finish the film, before presenting to the class and marking against the criteria. Once the assessment is over, I will be sure to post our evaluation after making slight additional edits to make it look to the best of our ability and to a higher quality.
We decided to film our evaluation in the school barn as we loved the location, lighting and atmosphere and we thought the originality of the location would reflect me and Maddie as people and our laid back personalities while still presenting an assessed piece of work.

Inspiration Video of a Previous A2 Media Group

After being shown this video by our tutors, it was then we realised that the music video we are going to produce would be mostly studio based. Although simple, we feel it would be most effective and appropriate for the overall finish we are hoping for.
With the idea's that we have for the costume and makeup that will be used throughout the song which we have related into huge depth with the lyrics, all we would need is the studio to create a very modern simplistic version of song using a studio and advanced editing techniques to make the video look to the highest of quality and sophistication.
I really overall like the idea that these students have used and with the support of our tutors we are also using their work as inspiration toward ours.


we have been asked to carry out our own task, mimicking the shots used in the four figure frame and reproduce it and edit it using Final Cut Pro. We did this to show our skills in basic editing and gain knowledge into how to create a composition of shots all at once and put the different clips into a split of 4 different images in the frame of our music video.

Lyric Annotation for 'I Need Air'

When continuing our research into the song and its lyrics, we spent time going through the lyrics to check that we wouldn't get stuck for ideas, and that the ones we had were being fulfilled throughout by looking and referring back to the lyrics of the song. The more we went through the lines and the the meanings of the song the more exciting ideas we came up with which has now enabled us to be able to organise characters, costumes, props, makeup and locations!

We came up with the main idea of having different scenes and crosscutting between them throughout the music video and following the inspirations that we used and a previously produced video we were shown created by media students just like ourselves. 


I feel that with great commitment and the ideas that we have, we can manipulate the speed, composition of shots and all the editing to the highest of standard and that we can successfully fulfil our ideas for our own production of 'I Need Air'

Part of the BIG change

well, after being split from our group of 3 by our tutors, we then discussed how strongly we felt to be put back together and came to the conclusion to send an email and ask for a tutorial to discuss how to overcome the situation and the solution we have to make this work.
After long discussions we came to the conclusion that if we were to go back into any from of a group, we were only allowed to have a couple and the other person would have to go alone.
After discussing possibilities and final outcomes, we came to the conclusion that me and Maddie would be best as a couple to continue the project and continue to use the song 'I Need Air'
We have put all our ideas together and as a new group we are more organised and motivated than ever, so with our determination and commitment we hope to make the most successful music video and fufill all our exciting ideas for the piece!

Update of BIG changes

after spending a few weeks doing some group work with the other piers I have been doing the current task with, my tutors decided it would be beneficial if we all went our separate ways and produced out OWN music video as the group wasn't working together and it was time to attempt this task alone. So with that, I am now about to continue if not make some dramatic changes in this short time and hopefully create an AS successful piece as originally planned, I will have to stay more focus and motivated to ensure I complete this difficult and heavy task but with a little motivation and a lot of idea's I believe I can do it and push forward to create a successful music video.

Song Change!

After discussing our possible ideas and the inspirations that we have had for our current song, we have decided that we would like to change the piece of music that we have used to 'I Need Air' by Magnetic Man. We feel after viewing other previous successful pieces that other A2 students have made, we would like to change the music to something a lot different and that fits in better with our inspirations and over all ideas for the project.
Yes, this does mean that we have had to change a lot of our planning but the simplicity of the new idea will work a lot better than trying to make it more complicated, and it shows with an easier location but with many different editing techniques, you can create a much better if not just as effective sequence.
We just need to get permission to use this song regarding the copyright laws, and we should be on our way!!
